Why micro power generation?

The conventional grid has failed to keep up with the demands of the ever growing industrial population. The growth of countries such as China, India and Brazil are placing an unprecedented demand on scarce resources such as coal and natural gas to meet the ever increasing demand for electricity. In addition, a large section of possible consumers do not have access to the minimum supply needed to sustain some of the basic needs of their day to day lives.

In addition, fossil fuel consumption continues to drive us closer to “doomsday”. Existing Solar PV technology is expensive and yet not robust enough as a viable alternative with critical mass. Moreover, it continues to pose a risk of hazardous waste after its lifecycle.

The problem we need to solve:

  • 1.2 billion people have no access to electricity across the world
    • More than 95% of these people are either in sub-Saharan African or developing Asia
    • And around 80% are in rural areas*

But how do we solve this problem? We liken this problem to that of accessibility to computing and how the solution came about through the advent of the desktop computer. What changed thereafter in the evolution of the human society is well known to all of us.

Drawing a parallel, why should the normal household not be able to generate electricity for its own consumption? It is easier said than done. This is not just deploying existing power generation technologies in a micro scale. A household in a Tokyo residential highrise will not be able to generate their electricity unless there is a technology developed for that specific application. The solution might be different for a farming household blessed with 6 hours of abundant sunshine 365 days a year and ownership of a critical mass of land that can be leveraged for solar thermal electric power generation.

Thus there is no one size fits all solution BUT there ARE solutions that can be deployed in each of these various scenarios. It is SUNNYTRON’s goal to bring these solutions to market.
